Security Checklist for Moving Into a New Home
Jul 31, 2018
When you move, there are many details that you have to organize. Whether you're moving across town, across the state or across the country, moving is a stressful time. Because you have so many concerns about your move, it's likely that some will get pushed to the side. It's okay to address some of these later on, but something that should stay one of your main concerns is your security for your new home.
A burglar may see a move as a chance to break in. They'll know your old home is vacant and may see if you left anything of value behind. If they notice you moving into your new home, they may picture your home cluttered with labeled boxes, making finding valuables much easier.
New Home Security Checklist
There are several security measures you can take before, during and after your move to make your new home secure. Here are some of the top security precautions you should take when moving into a new home:
- Have the locks changed: When you're moving into your new home, make sure you change the locks before moving in. There's always a chance that the previous owner doesn't hand over every copy of the key that was made. Changing the locks yourself will give you greater peace of mind when you move in.
- Set up outdoor lights: A great deterrent for burglars is light. Installing outdoor lights will allow you and your neighbors to see if anything out of the ordinary is happening outside your home. Even if you are not aware, someone else may see someone around your home and report it.
- Maintain your outdoor space: If the grass on your lawn is long and the outside of your home looks generally unkempt, it may seem like an invitation to a burglar. It's an obvious sign that no one is living there at the time. If your new home is going to be empty for a while, pay a company to mow your lawn and maintain the outdoor areas of your home. Doing so can help deter burglars until you move in and can install other security measures.
- Transfer or install a security system: The best way to make and keep your home secure is with a security system. If you had a system in your old home, you can simply transfer it to your new one. If you didn't already have a system, Certified Fire And Security can help you install one in your new home.
