How to Teach Kids About Home Security
Sep 10, 2018
As a parent, it's your job to keep your kids safe. That's probably one of the main reasons why you installed your home security system
. It gives you greater peace of mind from knowing that you and your family are safe. But even with your security system, you should teach your kids about home security.
Learning Home Security Basics
Bad things can happen in or near your home, whether your kids are home alone or whether you're there with them. There are things you can teach them that can lessen the likeliness of something like that from happening. What you teach your kids depends on their age, and you will teach your kids more as they get older. Here are some basic lessons to educate your kids about home safety:
- Keep the doors and windows locked
- Don't open the door to strangers
- Don't use the oven or other kitchen appliances that could start a fire
- Put a list of emergency phone numbers where your kids can easily find it
Teaching Your Kids How to Use Your Security System
Like the home security basics for kids, what you teach them about your home security system depends on their age. In general, when you install a home security system, it can make false alarms. When you have children in the house, the chances that your system will have false alarms go up. In some areas, you will have to pay a fee if your alarm system triggers a false alarm and calls for emergency personnel. To avoid false alarms, everyone in your home should understand how to use the system properly, including your kids.
Younger kids should be simply taught that the system is not a toy. In many cases, the alarm will be out of reach of very young kids, so it is not as much of an issue. Once they are old enough and able to reach it, make sure they understand that it is not something they should touch.
When your kids get a little older, you can teach them how to use the panic button in the case of an emergency. If they have a house key, they should also understand how to disarm the alarm so it doesn't go off accidentally when they come inside.
Once they get to middle school, you can give your kids a more thorough lesson on how to use the security system. Teach your kids how to arm and disarm the system and how to communicate with the security company on the other end in the case of an emergency.
